Urban Farm Collective

The Urban Farm Collective’s mission is to transform backyards and vacant lots into productive, vibrant community-oriented food gardens, using a barter system to exchange our produce. The project, by its nature, builds community, provides educational opportunities, empowers participants with food self-reliance, off-sets demand for imported food and much more.

The UFC is made up of about 15 gardens that each specialize in growing a different food crop, which rotates in a master collective-wide rotation.  All of the gardens are donated pieces of land in north and northest portland. The collective is made up of administrators, land-sharers, water-sharers, garden managers, garden apprentices, and volunteers, which all play an integral role. As a garden manager of Whikerton Garden, I am in charge of growing fruits and veggies and delivering harvest every week.

Each week, we come together and share our harvest in a money-free market. One hour working for the collective earns you one "slug" at the market. Only a few slugs, or working a couple of hours per week at one of the garden's work parties, is enough to get a generous portion of fresh fruits and vegetables. Every year there is more food, more varieties, and new additions to the UFC, making it an evolving community project.
